Igbo Wrestling


Igbo is in Nigeria that's in Africa.A very important quality for the Igboian people is that what ever they do they should always put forth their best effort. The people believe that wrestling is just not a sport but as a way of resolving problems. Also it can boost your social standing and add fame. Men and young boys would participate in wrestling fight. It was rare to see a women wrestling. For example if a girl has many people that want to marry her, the options would wrestle and the last one standing wins. Each village had its own wrestling ground. If you were fighting for a differnt reason you were grouped according to your previous successes. The fights usually happen at night. The fights are in a ring. The people who got to sit in the ring is the wrestlers, chief, people with a high title and the music players. The music player played an important role in the fight. They were valuable because they could add power the to the weak players and add a sense of excitement.

Wrestling was considered a major sport by the people of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, Africa. The Igbo tribe grouped wrestling and stick fighting together as similar sports. If someone participated in wrestling it meant they usually would participate in stick fighting It is hard for historians to find out where wrestling began, but the oldest record was from 2800 BC. It is one of the oldest known sports in the entire world. Wrestling was used as entertainment for people of higher classes. Wrestlers were given a lot of respect for participating in that sport. Men had to prove themselves worthy to society by wrestling sometimes. Wrestling is very common in men and young boys. Each year competitions are held and are used for entertainment. Schools are trying to introduce wrestling to females, however it is not nearly as common. Wrestling was very important to the Igbo tribe in Nigeria, Africa
